CapabilitiesThe company
Open source or self-hostable
The sandbox software can be run on your own servers.
Who offers it
Part of Who is behind it, which explains why it matters.
Fully: boxd and E2B. With a catch: Cloudflare Sandbox, Daytona and Tensorlake. Not at all: Agent 37, Blaxel, Boat, InstaBox, Lizard, Modal, Morph, Runtime, Sandboxer, Sprites and Vercel Sandbox.
Self-hosted, not open source: one binary on your own KVM hosts under an annual licence, with no licence or repository published for the code.
docs-confirmed “Yes. boxd ships as a single binary that runs every role, on your own KVM-capable Linux hosts.” Source
The runtime is open source and can be self-hosted on one machine; scaling across machines is the managed product.
docs-confirmed “Self-hosting means running [E2B Embed](https://github.com/e2b-dev/runtime/tree/main/embed#readme), the open-source runtime packaged for one machine” Source
- Cloudflare SandboxWith a catch
The catch: The SDK is open source, but the platform it runs on is Cloudflare's and cannot be self-hosted.
docs-confirmed “`@cloudflare/sandbox` works with a container you start from a Durable Object.” Source
The catch: Only the sandbox compute runs on your own machines, only after Daytona enables it, and the control plane stays Daytona's.
The public repository is archived, so there is no open-source route either.
docs-confirmed “Bring Your Own Compute enables you to run sandbox workloads on your own infrastructure while using Daytona's control plane to manage them.” Source
The catch: Self-hosting is offered only on the Enterprise plan and only in your own AWS account; the software is not open source.
docs-confirmed “Run Tensorlake sandboxes in your AWS account” Source
